The Men's short program from the World Figure Skating Championships in Moscow, Russia took place this morning (unfortunately starting at 5 a.m. our time, which was too early for me to watch. I needed the extra sleep before class and to prep for a long-day of paper writing!)
I just checked the results on Icenetwork.com and found out that Patrick Chan, the skater I profiled yesterday, has an 11.21 lead over Nobunari Oda and reigning World Champ, Daisuke Takahashi, both of Japan. Patrick's score of 93.02 broke a record set by Evgeny Plushenko (91.30) at the 2010 European Championships for highest score ever recorded in the short program under the International Judging System.
Reports say that the Americans were clean, but are still down in 11th, 12th, and 13th places. They are still within striking distance of cracking the top 10, which they're certainly going to do need to do if they want to earn enough points to send even two skaters to the championships next year. To send three skaters, they need a total that doesn't exceed 13, which seems like a long-shot at this point, but you can never say never in figure skating!
Congrats to Patrick, and wishing all the skaters good luck in the freeskate!
